LA Cookie Challenge: Tavern vs. Farmshop

I was having a rough day, so it was decided that it was time for another round of our cookie-off. Both of these locales, Tavern and Farmshop, are walking distance from our apartment. Can you say dangerous?

Tavern is a high-class restaurant and bakery known for being a place where celebrities have meetings with their agents. Their cookies are stars too. Tavern makes two types of chocolate chip cookies, but given that we were also committed to eating a cookie from another bakery in our face-off, we went with what they told us was the most popular, the chewy cookie. Tavern uses a super high quality dark chocolate, and they use a ton of it. Literally from top to bottom, you will run into patches of solid chocolate. So while it's not the best cookie to chocolate ratio, in my book, it's just so rich and decadent, you can't help but enjoy yourself.

Farmshop is restaurant, bakery, and specialty food shop (see here for our review of their Sunday Fried Chicken night) in the Brentwood Country Mart. They bake up a very classic bakery-style chocolate chip cookie that is crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. Don't get me wrong, it was a great cookie that I think just about anyone would be happy to consume, but it really didn't seem to have any character or complexity. We couldn't really decide how to describe it other than really good.

The Verdict

We both debated on this for awhile actually. I had some real issue with ratio of chocolate to actual cookie with Tavern, but in the end, the character of the cookie led both of us to select Tavern. I'm not sure, however, that Tavern can stand up to some of our other favorites in the next round.
